Green With Envy
You ever wonder just what “Green with Envy” actually means or where the term originated? I got you! It actually comes from Shakespeare!
In Othello, Shakespeare references a “green-eyed monster” whose actions were motivated by jealousy.
“O! Beware, my lord, of jealousy; it is the green-eyed monster which doth mock the meat it feeds on.” — Othello
Shakespeare also refers to green with envy in The Merchant of Venus;
“How all the other passions fleet to air, as doubtful thoughts and rash embraced despair and shuddering fear and green-eyed jealousy!” — Portia
In Antony and Cleopatra, Shakespeare referenced it again;
“Since Pompey’s feast, as Menas says, is troubled with the green sickness.”
So, there you have it! Before Shakespeare associated green with jealousy or envy, it was typically associated with illness since the early Greeks used the word interchangeably with pale. Perhaps Shakespeare literally meant his characters were sick with envy.

We love corned beef and cabbage, normally I make it on St Paddy’s day, but this year I am taking my Hubs out for the day. It was suppose to be a surprise, but I was so excited I spilled the beans.
Sounds like me when I was planning my husband’s 50th birthday party. Surprise?! Nope!
I’ve never had corned beef and cabbage.. I wonder if I’d like it. I do love the color green though! Those dresses are cute!
You should definitely try it! Then at least you’ll know! I don’t know if I can wait until the 17th to make some! ModCloth has a great selection of super cute dresses! Love them!
I don’t do much for St. Patrick’s Day because I am not Irish, but my mother has made a corned beef dinner every year since I was a kid & some years we all still go over there for it.
these look great! I’m ready for the holiday to be here already!
Well ya learn something new everyday!!! Those milkshakes look super delicious! Yummmm.

This post makes me miss my grandpa. Every year for St. Patrick’s Day he use to make his famous corned beef and cabbage. Oh, how I miss it, and of course him!
I love all those modcloth clothes. Such a stylish way to wear green for St. Patrick’s Day.
I love the shoes and several of the dresses. I can’t wear that much green at once though. I have Irish pale skin and I think if I tried to put on the dress and the shoes I would probably look like a leprechaun lol.
I love it some fantastic picks! The green handbag is right up my street 🙂 x
I have a pair of St. Patrick’s Day socks – they’re argyle with shamrocks. I try to remember to wear them, but I’m usually off a day or two!
I started planning my menu for St. Patricks day earlier this week, I love the typical corned beef and cabbage but want to include other Irish sides to change things a bit and try new foods.
Those green tights are definitely different, lol. It would definiltey show your spirit of the day.
These are some great themed treats and ideas for St. Patrick’s Day.
We don’t celebrate St Patrick for some reason but – the event seems really fun!
I love green! We don’t do much for St. Patty’s day but I do like wearing the green
Now,if only I can remember to wear green on the day! These are some great ideas and fun ways to keep in style.
Lots of fun stuff. I am having a Family Party to celebrate with a green dinner and a movie.
I’m actually not a huge fan of green but these dresses are really cute! The mint shakes look pretty tasty too….may have to give those a try!
St. Patricks Day… making green FUN!! 🙂 I’d like to try a homemade mint shake, those look delicious.
Those cupcakes look awesome! They might not make it to guests if I made them because if they taste as good as they look I’d eat them all.
I am not Irish, but I do love that green purse!
I love that Pine dress from Mod Cloth. It’s gorgeous! Lots of great items here!
I am loving that green lace type dress from Modcloth. Very nice and cute
I can’t wait for my Mom in law to prepare the corned beef with cabbage this St. Pat’s day 🙂 It’s their tradition since my Father in law is Irish 🙂
I love the looks of the cupcake. Also, thanks for the muppet trailer. I’m so out of date that I didn’t know the trailer was out!
