Two people working together to fix a washing machine

Many common household problems can be prevented if you act before they happen. However, the more time goes by without intervention, the harder it becomes to stop these problems from occurring. The worst part is that the only way to fix them may be to start from scratch — and you don’t have time for that! So, it might be a good idea to consider this list of common household problems and take preventative action before they happen.

1. Leaks

A number of different things can cause leaks. Often, simple wear and tear are to blame. Other times, though, leaks are the result of an improperly installed appliance or device. Leaks can be a minor nuisance or a major hazard. No matter what kind of leak you have, it is important that you fix it before long-term damage occurs to your property or possessions. Repair any leaks immediately. Any small leak should be repaired immediately because it will only worsen over time.

2. HVAC Maintenance

The HVAC system is one of the biggest energy users in your home. If it breaks down, you’ll spend more money on energy bills. Additionally, a broken HVAC system will cause you to suffer through extreme temperatures indoors. Regular preventative HVAC maintenance is key to preventing problems before they occur. You should have your air conditioning and heating units serviced every year.

3. Appliance Maintenance

It is important that you perform regular inspections of your appliances. Defective appliances can cause burns, electrical fires and other problems. Look for any signs of rust, dents or corrosion when inspecting your appliances. Also, examine the electrical wires and connections to look for exposed wiring or loose components. After determining whether an appliance needs service, you can schedule repairs before the problem becomes more complicated and expensive.

4. Foundation and Structure

If your property is built on sand or a soft, muddy area, your foundation will be more likely to sink over time. In turn, this will create structural problems within your home. The problem is that a sinking foundation can cause the entire structure of your home to cave in or even collapse on top of you and your family. The best way to prevent the sinking of your foundation is by having a contractor investigate regularly and help you understand the warning signs and risks.

5. Pest Control

A host of unwanted pests can invade your home. These insects and animals can wreak havoc on your home’s floors, windows and other parts. While there are many kinds of pests that may or may not cause damage, there are a few general guidelines to consider.  Clean your home regularly, especially the dark places and corners. Look for places where mice or termites may have chewed through walls. Avoid leaving food out for too long, and clean up spills on your floor quickly to prevent ants. You should also consider regular pest control services. This will limit the number of pests you must deal with in the future.

Preventative measures can go a long way to ensure your home is safe and healthy. Prevention can go a long way, so coming up with a plan for addressing your common household problems before they happen is always a good idea.
