While it’s nice to have a home sweet home, it’s even nicer to have a sweet home that is also safe. Unfortunately, many people each year focus a bit too much on making their home sweet rather than safe, resulting in accidents of all types that lead to their homes being damaged and also injuries or even deaths. To keep everyone safe in your home, make it a priority to conduct these routine safety checks on a regular basis.

Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

One of the simplest ways you can keep your home safe, checking your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors takes no more than a few minutes of you pushing some buttons on the detectors. If you test the detectors and any of them don’t respond immediately, replace the batteries or the detector itself, especially if it is several years old.

Electrical System

Along with checking your detectors, also take time to give your home’s electrical system a close inspection. When doing your home electrical safety check, look for such things as frayed wires on appliances and other devices, feel all of your home’s outlets and plugs to see if any feel especially warm, and check your home’s breaker box to ensure all circuit breakers are working properly. If you notice anything unusual along the way, have an electrician assess the situation.

Inspect the Water Heater

Even though you’re not having any trouble getting hot water, don’t make the mistake of ignoring your water heater during your safety check. When inspecting the water heater, look for puddles at the bottom of the heater. If you notice any, this may indicate your water heater’s pressure-relief valve is opening up far too often, indicating the tank’s internal pressure is too high.

Hazardous Materials

If you have poisonous products in your home, such as various types of cleaners or pesticides, always make sure these are secured in locked cabinets so that children and pets cannot gain access to them. Unfortunately, it only takes a few seconds to have a tragedy take place.

Locks on Doors and Windows

Finally, do a quick assessment of the locks on your home’s doors and windows. Should you notice any that are not working properly, have them replaced. By doing so, you and your family can stay safe and have peace of mind 24/7.

Rather than have your family become victims of carbon monoxide poisoning, see your home go up in flames due to faulty smoke detectors, or have another disaster take place, perform these routine safety checks each month to ensure you do indeed have a sweet and safe home.
