If the weather is nice in summer, you can spend many quality hours in the garden, but before you sit down on your patio with a glass of wine, carry out some annual summer maintenance. Some tasks that you don’t want to miss include lawn care, plant care, weeding, and fence care.
Lawn Care
In most gardens, the lawn is the centrepiece. The last thing you and your guests want to look at are moss and weeds in the grass. Over the winter, moss starts to grow on the lawn creating an uneven and unsightly surface. Spring and summer are good times to mitigate moss and weeds.
Along with removing moss and weeds, you will also want to mow the lawn and put down some weed killer or treatment to prevent them from returning – at least for the summer. Chances are the weeds will return over the winter since they are next to impossible to eradicate completely.
Fence Care
Fences are probably the best way to protect your garden and create privacy for the summer. Fences are also an effective soundproof barrier, so if you live in a high-traffic area, garden fences are essential. Make the most of your garden this summer with garden fence repairs.
Chances are you will need to repair your fences in the summer due to winter damage. It’s also a good time to paint or stain the fence to bring out the colors. And don’t forget about the driveway gates. These also need maintenance now and again, especially hinges that need to be oiled.
Plant Care
Plants bring color and character to our garden. The great thing about garden flowers is that you can get creative when arranging them and make the garden your own. However, there are a few things you need to know about plants if you want to get the best value from them in the summer.
Depending on the flower types, you might need to plant them early. Some species need to be planets in the spring, while others should be planted as far back as fall. If you notice any diseased leaves on the plants, they need to be removed fast to prevent them from spreading.
Container Care
Containers are an excellent way of bringing structure and color to your garden, but they need to be artificially watered, especially if they are on the larger side and you live in a dry area. When you water your containers, you need to ensure the container is watered throughout the compost.
With smaller containers, it can be tempting to allow the rain to water them naturally, but even heavy rainfall areas may not water the compost thoroughly enough. Again water the soil until you can see water coming from the bottom of the container to sustain plants for the long term.
Patio Care
Spring and summer are the best times to care for your patio and paving. Chances are you will see some weeds in the cracks during summer; this is normal, and removing them needs to be a perennial task. Try to uproot the weeds, and then put down weed killer to prevent any regrowth.
