My almost 14 year old 8th Grader (not pictured in stock photo above) is taking Health Education this term. It has made from some interesting conversations at home. Thankfully, we have a pretty open door for communication. He has been “dating” girls since last year and calling random girls his “girl friend” for the year or two before that. You know, where two kids say they are “dating” but never actually go on a date? Yeah, that kind. Until this year, when he’s gone on “dates” with his “girlfriend” and their group of friends to the Ice Skating Arena, School Dances and Sports events.

We’ve had some conversations but I’ve never really established a list of “Rules” or “Guidelines” for his dating activities before. I think I kind of fast-forwarded to The “talk” without giving much consideration to the details (Like the things don’t result in me becoming a Grandmother before the age of 40).

The following worksheet came home yesterday and appeared in front of me this morning for my take on the 10 Guidelines for Dating. I felt a little hard-pressed to throw these down on paper so he could return the assignment and make the grade without having a real conversation around it. But, I think these are pretty fair guidelines. Thought they do fall short from my first thought, “Keep it in your pants!”

Below is the worksheet, the top half completed by my almost 14 year old. The bottom, half completed by me. Definitely open for discussion, thoughts and feedback! It takes a “Village” or something like that.

Oh, and this same son made the Track team last night! Yippee! Less time for dating! Score!

Using the notes from brainstorming in class, write at least 10 specific items for to create a personal Code of Conduct for dating?

  1. Be safe
  2. Have fun
  3. Don’t fight
  4. Don’t cheat
  5. Respect other wants
  6. Respect other sex
  7. Meet other sex’s parents
  8. Don’t be shy
  9. Be nice
  10. Be good!

This portion of the assignment is to be completed with the cooperation and feedback of your parents or guardians. One must sign below indicating their participation. Discuss and record 10 guidelines for dating.

  1. Be Respectful
  2. Be Honest
  3. Communicate
  4. Prioritize
  5. Ask Questions
  6. Understand Consequences
  7. Think Before You Act
  8. Establish Boundaries
  9. Avoid Peer Pressure
  10. Consider Short & Long Term Goals
