There are always opportunities to change your home. From a complete remodel to a partial renovation or a few updates to your decor, there is plenty that you can do to alter the look and feel of your home. And yet, something that is often overlooked but can have a significant impact on the look and feel of your home is the lighting. Here are some helpful tips on how you can make light the centerpiece of your home.

Let the Sunshine In, or Not

First things first, natural light is always a winner in any conversation revolving around lighting. There is something inherently uplifting about letting the sunshine in through your windows and into your home. With the rays glinting off a shining surface in your home or directly warming your face while you are drinking a cup of coffee in the morning at the breakfast table, the light coming into your home is a wonderful thing to behold.

And yet, sometimes, you just need to dial the strength of the sun back a bit. That is when blinds for windows are at your service. Blinds are a realistic solution to filter out the sun and afford you privacy, regardless of the time of day. They are also a decorative element within your home. Select blinds that blend seamlessly into the wall color or contrast perfectly and coordinate with the rest of the wood decor in your home.

Add a Skylight or Two

Skylights used to be a more common architectural element in new builds, and now they are back again. Just like regular windows, skylights are a way to bring more natural light into your home. The appeal is that, once installed, they are just there. You hardly notice their presence, except as your home fills with natural light throughout the day. Skylights offer a diffuse lighting that bathes your home during the day. They help reduce your daytime energy bill by practically removing the need to turn on the interior lights.

Layer Your Lighting

If you have not heard of the concept of layered lighting within your home, it is a good time to learn about it. At its core, layered lighting involves the installation and varied use of different lighting styles in each room of your home.

Recessed or canned lighting inset into the ceiling offers a brighter expanse of light throughout the room. Wall sconces add more depth and moody vibes as they incorporate ambient light and highlight whatever is around them. Freestanding lights offer targeted spotlights over a comfortable reading chair or to light up the corner of a room. Desk lamps and end table lamps also serve as targeted lighting. With layered lighting, you can turn on the lights you want in any room to change the mood from a study session and homework to a romantic night in or drinks with friends.
