Owning a cabin can sometimes feel like the culmination of a lot of time and effort for most people. However, it can also come with quite a few responsibilities and needs of its own. There are enough chores and tasks that it can be all too easy to overlook some of the things you could be doing. Here are a few of the ways you might not be taking care of your cabin.
Refrigeration
Your refrigerator is great for helping you stock food or frozen items and keeping them fresh, even when you’re not currently staying at your cabin. While it might not seem like this device needs much in the way of maintenance, there are some areas of it that you should look at periodically. Failing to do so could cause the unit to make the cabin dirtier than it needs to be. Check the coils for dust, dirt, and other things that could be impeding their functions. You can use a special brush to clean them. This helps to prolong the life of your fridge, and you can clean any dirt in these spots at the same time.
Pipes
The plumbing in your cabin helps to ensure that you have hot or cold running water whenever you might need it. However, it needs a little care from time to time. If you find that your water is not draining quickly, it could be an issue with some buildup of residue in the pipes. One solution you can try is to use hydro jetting. This method uses water at high pressures to scour the insides of your pipes and forcefully remove any debris or greasy substances that might be contributing to the clogs. It should even make it harder for clogs to form in the future.
Crawl Spaces
There are small areas in your cabin that are useful for maintenance purposes. However, crawl spaces also come with issues that can crop up if you don’t inspect them regularly. They are good homes for leaks, mold, or even small animals sometimes. You should check these places for any of the above at least every few months. In addition, installing vapor barriers in any crawl spaces is a good idea.
Alarms
All of the care and attention to your cabin won’t do a lot of good if you don’t do what you can to keep everything safe. While locks are an obvious first step, there are other ways you can guard yourself, your family, or your pets. If you don’t have the budget for an expensive alarm system, you can go for affordable single units. These small objects can sit on windows or near doors and can go off if there is a breach.
These are just a few of the ways you might not be doing quite as much for your cabin upkeep as you could. If it feels overwhelming, don’t worry. You can make a checklist of some of the things that seem the most urgent. If you tackle each item on the list as you go down, it could help you focus and complete tasks without being distracted by whatever else you think you might need to do for the cabin.
