Your home’s security is important because it’s your security. Even if you think your house is secure, there are probably still things you can do to make it even more secure. Consider these upgrades to protect your home and yourself.
Get a Security System
A security system is a great way to make sure your home is protected at all times. If you can’t afford a security system, though, you’ll probably be able to afford a decoy sticker. Just having something that says “protected by security system” can deter thieves from breaking into your home. You may also want to invest in a fake security camera (or a real one) and a “beware of dog” sign even if you don’t have one.
Change the Locks
It might not be realistic to have your locks changed every year, but using a locksmith service to have the locks changed once in a while might help you make sure your home is protected. It might be easy to forget giving a house sitter or a delivery person a key and have many copies out in the world. When you have your locks changed, you’ll make sure your home is secure again.
Stay Discreet
If you’re going on vacation, don’t post it all over social media. Leave some trash in your can and make sure to stop your mail or have a neighbor get it. All of these can be signs that someone is not home and burglars love that.
Try Lighting
Good lighting around the outside of your home might deter burglars or people who would normally want to break into your home. If you have good flood lighting, outdoor lighting and even a lamp-post, you might be able to have a better chance at deterring thieves.
Try Advanced Measures
Even if you have a deadbolt on your door (which you should), you might want to take even more advanced measures for protecting your home. Window stops are great to prevent people from breaking in through the windows while thumb latches can add an extra layer of protection to your doors. Something as simple as a dowel rod can prevent people from breaking into a sliding glass door too.
If you think about security and make sure it’s a priority, you will have a better chance at a secure home. It’s important to protect your home because it’s a way of protecting yourself.
