So what happens if you want to upgrade your living space? What do you have to do? And, crucially, how much do you have to spend? And what about disruption and mess… is that going to play a part?

Well, the answers might not be as simple as you’d think because it all comes down to what you mean when you say ‘upgrade’. You might assume that you’ve got to knock down walls and rip out bathrooms, and that might be necessary, but it won’t always be – sometimes it’s a lot less hard work than that.

What’s Bothering You?

It’s tempting to think you need a full and detailed plan to make any kind of change in your home, but the truth is that it’s often easiest to just start with the things that are bothering you and fix or change them – at least that way, you’ll make some progress and your home will be a lot more pleasant to be in.

And the thing (or things) that bother you could be anything at all, big or small. Perhaps you don’t have enough storage, for example, or maybe the layout’s awkward, or perhaps there’s a room that’s always dark, no matter what time of day or year it is.

It’s also best to just pick one thing at a time and get it completely done, otherwise you’ll get frustrated at half finished jobs, and you might lose motivation too.

Get The Lighting Right

Lighting is a simple thing to change, but the difference it can end up making can be massive – it might even be that it’s the only thing you need to do to get the look and feel you wanted in your home.

The problem is that traditionally you’ll have one big overhead light, but that can actually be the issue, and it can make the room feel quite flat, not to mention it’s not going to light everywhere, so you’ll always have dark corners. It’s actually better to have a couple of lamps instead, because that’s going to give you a warmer atmosphere, plus you can move them around so you get the best light.

Clear Some Space

Clutter builds up without you noticing it’s happening because it’s a slow process, and then all of a sudden, you’ll see the mess that’s appeared in your home, and that’s going to be stressful. In fact, it’s stressful before that, it’s just that you won’t always consciously notice it – subconsciously, though, you’ll be distracted by it and quite stressed out at the same time.

We’re not saying you’ve got to get rid of everything, but clearing out what you don’t want anymore is really going to help make your home feel instantly upgraded.

Does Bigger Change Make Sense?

Sometimes small updates are a great start, but they’ll highlight the need for something a bit bigger to happen. For example, you might realise the layout could work better, or that certain features on your home are outdated, etc.

If that’s the case, home renovation by experts tends to be the best bet – you can speak to them about what you want, they’ll be able to offer ideas and solutions, and you won’t even have to get your hands dirty, so it’s the ideal way to get things done.
