Summer is in full swing! Relaxing and enjoying the nice weather is great for kids, however, children who don’t engage in educational activities over the summer stand to lose an average of 2.6 months of academic growth – This is called Summer Slide.
Luckily, preventing Summer Slide is now fun for your little one! PowerMyLearning is a free website with everything your K-2nd grader needs to get ahead for the upcoming school year! The site provides educational online games that incorporate things your child already loves such as trains, animals and even fashion.
PowerMyLearning offers thousands of free games, videos and interactives in all major K-12 subjects but my newly titled 2nd grader tends to struggle a bit in Math. He’s not too far below average but his teacher recommended lots of Math practice over the summer.
Sure, there are flash cards but those usually end up scattered about and turn into a “fun” game of 52 pick-up. Besides, the little guy loves computer time. He gets to play games while I get the reassurance that he is learning something! Win-win for us both!
When I went to the site and hovered over “Math” I easily selected 2nd grade. I’m not going to lie here, when I saw “Math Man” I got overly excited! I mean, really. Math and Pac-Man? My 80’s Atari playing inner child jumped for joy! Yes, please!! The game is fun, you can only go after the ghosts that have the correct solution to the math problem on them. It was a bit of a challenge getting the little guy to grasp the concept at first but once he did he was off and running, err, eating and solving!
The site is free but you do have to register. Easy process for Mom and Dad but make sure you are at the ready to get this part going for your child. Then for younger kids you may need to give them an overview to get them going. Then the fun for them begins!! My little guy really had a great time. As much as I wanted him to love Math Man he had his own idea of a favorite… You can even pick a category of skills that your child needs to work on and then allow them to chose which game they want to play from there.
Some of the other games he enjoyed were George’s Busy Day- Museum of Tens featuring the adorable Curious George of PBS Kids and Baloon Pop. Screenshots of each below. We’ve just gotten started with the fun and adventures offered completely free here! The seven year old can’t wait to continue exploring, learning and having fun!
