Your dog is a precious member of your family, and it is natural to want to protect them from harm. This includes keeping dangerous items out of their reach. The last thing you want is for your dog to get a hold of hazards such as toxic foods, sharp or small objects, and electrical wires.

Luckily, you can prevent an injury, illness, or worse from happening to your dog. Here are several tips on how to keep dangerous objects out of your dog’s mouth.

Put Them On High Shelves

One idea is to place dangerous items such as sewing needles, small toys, and certain houseplants on high shelves. Your dog cannot jump or climb on a high shelf to get to those items, and they may not even think about those items once they are out of sight.

Place Them Inside a Cabinet

If you are worried about the items getting knocked off the shelf, you can always place them inside a cabinet. You can even place a latch on lower cabinets to add an extra layer of protection. This is a great idea for chocolate bars, medications, and cosmetics because these items can lead to tragedy.

Hide Wires and Cords

There are several ways to keep your dog from chewing on wires and cords. One idea is to use zip ties to attach the cords to the legs of your desk or other furniture. Another idea is to cover the wires and cords with an area rug. You can also prevent chewing and scratching by looking into spiral cord wrap.

Remove Them From the Area

You can also keep your dog safe and give yourself peace of mind by removing certain items from your dog’s area altogether. This way, you know for a fact your dog is not going to get to these items. For example, snacks can be placed inside your bedroom drawer instead of on the kitchen counter as a way to hide them from your dog.

If your dog does get a hold of a dangerous object, it is important to keep an eye on them. There is a chance you have gotten the object from them before any serious damage was done, but you still want to ensure your dog is not sick or injured. You should also contact your veterinarian to determine your next step. A medical professional will be able to help determine what should be done when your dog eats something that it shouldn’t have. For the sake of your pet’s health, it’s best to seek help as soon as possible.

It is important to take precautions because dogs can be very playful and curious. When you take the steps to protect your pet from dangerous objects, you are keeping your dog safe around the clock.
