Moving from house to house is just a part of life. You go from living in your parents’ house to living in uni dorms, you go from uni dorms to living in your own rented apartment, and one day you may be fortunate enough to buy your own house. It doesn’t matter whether you move often or you literally live out of one bag and you travel the globe and hop from house to house, moving is a stressful process. The good news is that while moving isn’t necessarily easy, there are ways to make it quick work to reduce the amount of stress you have with it.

The stresses of moving often come from the speed in which you have to do it. It’s not always easy to find small storage units for all your stuff at short notice. It’s also not that easy to come up with the money that it takes to move, because between the cost of the movers, the cost of the packing boxes, and the cost of the deposit and the rent that you have to pay upfront, moving gets pricey! You can make this a less stressful process, and it’s all in the preparation. So, below we have four tips for a fast house move – maybe with a little bit of stress!

  1. Get prepared. The best way to pack for your move is to start as early as possible. Consider the tenancy that you’re on right now, if you know that you’re going to be moving at the end of your tenancy you can get started right now. Before you get to even packing, there are things you can do right this second that will make it easy. Make a list of your utility companies, and all the places your address is listed. Make a list of all the areas in which you like to search for a new house. Make a list of why you’re moving so you know why you’re ending your tenancy. Preparation is key.
  2. Next, find a mover! You do not have to do a fast move, or a slow move or by yourself. Finding a mover is one of the best things that you can do to move house, because they are the experts of what they do. The moment you know you’re moving you can start searching for quality and reliability in movers in your area. You can also set your budget so that you know how much you have to spend on your mover with regard to the amount of furniture and items you have to move in the first place.
  3. Plan your packing. We mentioned storage units earlier, and this is because there’s every chance you may have to store some of your belongings before you can officially move it. If you’re going to be couch surfing between tenancies, then working on packing in advance so that everything you haven’t used in the last six months can be boxed and ready to be stored early is smart! This way, the week of your move all you have to do is pack a suitcase.
  4. Get rid of what you don’t need. Your move is going to be so much simpler if you organise all of your things and get rid of the things you haven’t used. Recycle or donate what you don’t need any more I don’t take things you haven’t used for the past six months to your new house. Of course, this doesn’t include sentimental items.
