When it comes to fashion, there are a lot of people that don’t really understand how to put together a cohesive outfit. They tend to pick things that their friends wear or get inspiration from online magazines and social media. There’s nothing wrong with this and it’s completely fine to get ideas from other people. However, it’s always good to understand the logic that goes behind those decisions and what actually makes a cohesive outfit.

With this knowledge in mind, you’ll easily be able to create great outfits every day when you go out. So in this post, we’ll be covering three basic but important tips that will change the way you pick your clothes in the morning.

  1. Identify your statement pieces and keep them to a minimum

A statement piece is anything that can stand out in your outfit. For instance, sports shirts with team names on them can count as statement pieces, or a beautiful bag with unique patterns can also be considered a statement piece. The goal here is to keep statement pieces to a minimum by complementing it with blander pieces. This helps you highlight those unique pieces of clothing or accessories and creates a cohesive outfit.

  1. Understand the importance of color

Colour is one of the most important things to understand when putting together your outfits. This is because color can greatly affect the mood and overall feel of your outfit. The general rule of thumb is to stick to neutral colors whenever possible, only reserving one or two pieces to a bolder color. This is because neutral colors tend to blend well with other neutrals, but using a bold color creates contrast which highlights it even more.

You can also start looking at the contrast of the colors that you’re wearing. Something lighter (such as a pastel pink) can generally go well with anything because it’s subtle and not so bright. In fact, it can even be considered somewhat neutral if it’s lacking in saturation. However, with bolder colors such as hot pink, it’s much more difficult to create a matching outfit. You either need to pair it with other bold colors (something that requires a lot of confidence) or you need to combine it with neutral colors so it becomes the center of attention.

  1. Don’t just follow what celebrities wear

Lastly, make sure you don’t just follow celebrities. There are plenty of fashion magazines that are dedicated to finding the clothes that celebrities wear and they’ll try to justify those outfits. The reality is that the celebrities don’t always know what they’re doing and they’re easily influenced by trends. Instead, if you have to get inspiration, look for influencers on social media such as Instagram or speak to a stylist instead.

You’ll eventually want to start developing your own sense of style and fashion. Instead of picking things that are popular in mainstream media, you want to reach a point where you have outfits that make you feel comfortable and confident.
