As a homeowner, you need to be prepared to face issues with your property. Many things can go wrong and if these problems are ignored, they could get much worse and end up costing you a lot of money to fix. Some problems aren’t always easy to identify though, therefore, you need to make sure you’re regularly checking areas where these issues could be, such as the basement and attic. Listed below are four of the most common things that can go wrong in a home, how to identify them, and what to do about it:

The Roof

Stormy weather can cause problems for a roof, such as falling trees, broken tiles, or other debris that is swept onto your roof. After a storm, it’s always worth inspecting your roof to make sure you can’t see any signs of damage, and always cut back trees to avoid a branch falling through it! Other indications that you might have a problem with your roof are high energy bills due to a loss of heat, leaks and damp patches. You can check to see if there are any holes in your roof by entering your attic and if you notice any light coming in from inside, that is a clear sign of damage. Call a professional roofing contractor to inspect the damage and fix it for you.

The Electrics

Faulty wiring in your home is not only a nuisance but can also pose a serious health and safety risk. Electric shocks and fires are the main hazards as a result of bad wiring or other electrical issues. If your circuit breaker is tripping regularly, you can smell burning, the lights dim or flicker a lot or your wall outlets are hot or spark, these are all indications of poor wiring in your home. Call an emergency electrician to inspect the issue as soon as possible.

Plumbing

Another very common issue for homeowners is problems with the plumbing. These problems aren’t always severe, sometimes it’s just a minor leak, but it shouldn’t be ignored as a leaking pipe can cause further issues. Signs that there might be a problem with your plumbing include low water pressure, discolored water coming from the taps, or no water at all. Signs of a burst pipe will be leaks and big damp patches on your ceilings or walls. Some plumbing issues you might be able to fix yourself (tightening a loose tap, for example) but other things will require professional attention.

Pests

Mice, rats, termites, and cockroaches are all common pests that like to move into your home and it’s an unpleasant experience. A good way to avoid this is by making sure your house if free from clutter, food sources are always sealed away and the place is kept clean and tidy. If you start seeing droppings, damaged plants, and damage to the home’s structure or furniture, these are indicators of an infestation. You can set traps yourself but if the problem persists you will need to call pest control for a more thorough job.

As a homeowner make sure you’re looking out for these common problems to catch them early and avoid spending a lot on repairs.
