Starting Small Smart Ideas for First Time Parents

If you are pregnant or hoping to adopt, there are some small things you can do to help you stay on budget while preparing for your new arrival. With so many baby products available, it is easy to find yourself buying some you don’t actually need. To stay within a budget, it is important to make smart choices when preparing for your new baby.

Don’t Go Overboard on Products
Make a list of things you will need for the first three months. If you buy as they grow, you will find yourself spending a lot less than if you try and buy for the first five years. As you begin to feel more comfortable in your new role as parent, you will also be better able to decide what you actually need, and what you can do without.

Buy Gender Neutral
If you know you are going to have more than one child, buying gender neutral items is a great way to save money. While it may be tempting to buy the cute pink stroller and car seat, if you buy something in a neutral color instead, it will work for your next child whether girl or boy. Travel systems are one of the most expensive items you will need to purchase. Buying a system that is high quality and gender neutral is a wise investment. Crib bedding, and nursery décor are other areas where buying gender neutral items can save you money.

Don’t Be Afraid To Buy From Second Hand Stores
Second hand stores, garage sales, and online discounts can be a parent’s best friend. Kids outgrow toys like they do clothes, and it is easy to spend hundreds of dollars on toys for every stage of development. Invest in a few key items such as a play mat and a really great baby swing, but then buy the rest of the toys used. Spending two dollars on a toy and finding out your child doesn’t like it, isn’t quite as painful as spending twenty on the same item.

You Don’t Need Name Brand
Diapers and baby wipes are another huge expense for parents. Unless you decide to use cloth, you will need to buy a lot of diapers. Buying store brands can save you money, and most are just as good as the more expensive brands.

Preparing for a child doesn’t have to be overwhelming, or put you in debt. By planning ahead and being smart about your choices, you will be able to stay on budget and still have everything you need to raise a happy healthy baby.
