3 Vacations for You and Your Special Someone

Whether this is your first weekend away as a couple or you’re looking for the perfect place to pop the question, a couple’s vacation is a great way to get to know each other a little better and enjoy each other’s company. Here are three vacation ideas for you and your special someone.

1. I Like the Nightlife, Baby

If you and your significant other love the pulse of nightclub music, the twinkling of city lights, and the social life that can be found in inner-city attractions, plan your vacation around the nightlife. Big cities have a bustling, high-energy beat all their own that offers plenty to do and see for couples who prefer to be on the go. Look for these attractions in a city near you or halfway around the world:

  • Famous Restaurants: A fancy meal can set the tone for a romantic evening. Cities, at home and abroad, host classic fine dining options (like Charlie Trotter’s in Chicago) as well as up-and-coming culinary experiences from world-famous chefs (like Gordon Ramsey BurGR in Las Vegas) that home-based foodies and professional connoisseurs alike can enjoy.
  • Nightclubs: Spend the night chatting over drinks or in each other arms at a nightclub. Check out rooftop nightclubs, beach clubs, and warehouse dance floors for an alternative to the traditional club scene.
  • Shows: A stay in the city would hardly be complete without a little taste of the theater. Whether you and your special someone are looking for a few laughs, a way to get in the mood, or a little bit of enchantment, shows are a great option. Check out a classic play, new musical comedy (like “The Book of Mormon Musical”), a magic show, an acrobatic display (like Cirque de Solei’s “O”), or a burlesque.
  • Shopping: Take an afternoon to hit the stores in the city of your choice. Whether you decide to window shop on Rodeo Drive in Hollywood or visit the iconic Harold’s Square Macy’s in New York City, shopping is a fun way to spend time hand-in-hand in the hubbub of the big city

2. Take Me Out to the Ballgame

Nothing brings people together like engaging competition. Whether you and your significant other prefer to be in on the action or cheer your team on from the sidelines, you have plenty of options. Consider these sports-centric vacation options:

  • Lodges and Resorts: Whether you and your special someone are planning a month-long getaway or a fun weekend, a ski lodge, beach or country resort, or ranch is a great way to get involved in sports as a couple. Hit the tennis courts for doubles, the volleyball pit for sand and sun, or the slopes for some friendly competition.
  • International Events: Very little can compare with cheering on world-class athletes in courtside seats with the one you love beside you. Plan ahead to get 2015 Australian Open ticket packages, 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics tickets, or great seats for the World Cup, World Series, or the Gymnastics World Championships.
  • Tournaments: Get involved in your favorite sports by signing up for a couples’ tournament. Become a dynamic live action role play (LARP) warrior duo, Amazing Race-style scavenger hunt team, or join an amateur basketball, softball, or soccer team.
  • National Events: Home games can be just as exciting as international competitions. Invest in season tickets for a series of mini-vacations or attend local sports games as a couple

3. We Didn’t Start the Fire

For couples who love historical trivia, the cinema, or learning more about the past, historical sites offer a chance to bond over a shared love of history. Consider these kinds of sights, which combine rich history with hands-on adventure:

  • Film Destinations: History isn’t just about battles and treaties. Check out attractions like an active television show set, the Harry Potter Exhibition, Dorothy’s Ruby Slippers (housed in the American History Museum at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C.), and costume exhibits from your favorite major motion pictures.
  • Interactive Landmarks: Many landmarks are becoming more than just a pretty sight. Entrench yourselves in history at interactive landmarks. Geocache in the Fortress of Louisbourg in Novia Scotia; tour Jack the Ripper’s haunt in London; dig for dinosaur bones in The Quarry at Dinosaur National Monument in Vernal, Utah; or take a ghost tour at the Stonewall Jackson Cemetery in Lexington, Virginia.
  • Art Collections: Art museums are great couple’s destinations—you can spend an entire day looking at stunning sights (including your companion). Visit famous art collections like the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Louvre in Paris, or the National Museum of African Art in D.C. or discover your new favorite artist at a local art exhibit.
  • Reenactments: For couples who like to get their hands dirty, reenactments (like the Battle of Gettysburg), period-accurate historical sites (like Salem Village in Massachusetts), and Renaissance Fairs are ideal for being transported through time together.

No matter where you and your special someone’s tastes lie, a couple’s retreat is a fun way to get to know each other better, strengthen your bond, or plan your future together. Plan a trip to the big city, a ballgame, or the past to make your next shared vacation a memorable one.

  1. These are all great ideas. Sometimes when I would plan an escape with my husband, the work involved preparing for coverage didn’t seem worth it…until we went away. Then it did!
