Winter Comfort Foods

Talk about comfort food! For me during the winter just about anything in the Crockpot is comfort food! There’s nothing like the smell of a good hearty meal wafting throughout the entire house on a cold winter day!

For me, comfort foods are those big hearty meals that warm you up from the inside when the temps are below zero on the outside! Stews and roasts and casseroles are definitely at the top of my comfort foods list!

Do you often prepare comfort foods for your family? I’d love to know some of your favorites! Feel free to leave links to your best comfort food recipes in the comments!!

We love anything crockpot related and have been on a Stroganoff kick lately.  I was craving stroganoff but didn’t feel much like running to the store for the beef and had this roast already thawed so I thought, “Why not combine the two?” And this was the result. A new favorite!

We also really enjoy sour cream and Hood is really our favorite brand. (Honest! My love for Hood was why I applied for this sponsored post opportunity!) We use sour cream on tacos (my daughter has sour cream with a side of taco- actually), fajitas, on baked potatoes, in mashed potatoes, on chili and tortilla soup and definitely for dips. Speaking of dips- the best and easiest onion dip recipe is simply an envelope of onion soup mix and a container of Hood sour cream. Mix, chill, devour!

Slow Cooked Roast Pork and Potatoes

I put my pork roast in the CrockPot, added a few cloves of diced fresh garlic, one chopped onion, an envelope of onion soup mix and used up some leftover beef broth. You might use chicken or beef broth or even water for yours. I used about 2 cups of broth. Then I added in potatoes and carrots and set it on low for about 6 hours. The exact time will depend on how big your roast is. You could even replace the pork roast all together and use a beef roast. I think I’m going to try that next time! (Check out my most popular recipe ever, Crocka Cola Pot Roast! You could totally rock this Hood Sour Cream Sauce with that roast too!)

Hood Sour Cream Sauce Recipe

  • Broth/Drippings from Roast after Meat and Veggies are Removed from the CrockPot
  • 1 Can Cream of Mushroom Soup
  • 1 Jar Mushrooms
  • 1-2 Cups Hood Sour Cream
  • 1-2 Tbs Cornstarch
  • 1/4 Cup Cold Water

After your roast is cooked remove the meat and vegetables from the CrockPot. Keep Warm. Add the cream of mushroom soup, mushrooms and sour cream to the broth in the crock pot. Mix well.
Whisk the cornstarch and water together until smooth. Stir into the sour cream mixture. Turn the crock pot to high and heat for about 10-15 minutes. Serve over meat and veggies.
