Keeping your family safe can feel like a full-time job. Whether that’s baby-proofing before your child starts crawling, eliminating trip hazards from the star for your aging grandparents, or dressing a burn, the job is never done. But, there are some simple steps you can take to put yourself and your family in the best position to keep everyone in your household as safe as, well, houses!

1. Planning for fire safety

Whether that means sourcing fire-safety advice from a local fire expert such as Clyde Thomas Fire Chief or taking an online course, it’s important to stay up to date on fire safety. Keeping yourself informed will help you prepare a fire safety plan. When you’ve got your plan together, practice it with your household to ensure everyone knows what to do in case of an emergency. Make sure to check that all the fire alarms and smoke detectors in your home are fully functional by checking them regularly.

The best way to keep everyone safe is to stop fires happening in the first place. That means ensuring that any candles or naked flames are kept away from flammable materials and electricals are checked frequently to avoid instances of electrical fires.

2. Stay in-the-know on first aid

Knowledge is power, especially when it comes to first aid. Young children are likely to experience knocks and injuries while they’re running around, so knowing how to treat bumps and bruises, keeping a well-stocked first aid kit, and knowing when to ask for help are all key. Make sure to keep your first aid kit in a secure, dry place, away from anyone who could harm themselves with the items.

You may not be a pro, but to keep your family safe it’s important to know the basics. Brush up on basics, like taking care of head injuries, allergic reactions, nosebleeds, and broken bones. If you’re not confident in your first aid skills at the moment, then it could be time to brush up by taking a first aid course. Crucially, if you’re not confident that you can handle the situation, then you’ve got to know when to call in the professionals.

3. Home security systems

To protect your family from harm, and look after your home, security systems can come in handy. While they may seem extreme, with a strong security system you can have complete peace of mind, wherever you are. If you’re daunted by this step initially, you can pick up a security doorbell that will track the comings and goings from your front door, as well as alert you when someone rings the doorbell. The added bonus? You’ll never miss a package!

If you are looking to be in total control of your home security, you can install a smart home security system. They mean you can be confident your home is safe, inside and out, from your phone.

Hopefully, this article has provided you with some tips, trips, and inspiration for keeping your family safe, whatever age!
