Whether or not you are a homeowner or are renting a property and have your rental deposit at stake, there are few incidents more traumatic than spilling something on your cozy carpets. The good news is that, as long as you have a few necessities on hand, you should be able to tackle and remove the stain quickly and effectively. Here is a guide to removing carpet stains depending on what caused them in the first place.

Red wine

This is arguably the most common carpet stain and undoubtedly one of the most challenging to remove. Red wine is chockfull of colorful tannins that adhere to, and dye, the many fibers of the carpet the second that unfortunate spill takes place. Begin the damage control process by grabbing an absorbent cloth and blotting away at the affected area so as to get rid of any excess liquid. Do not rub as this will simply spread the stain even more. Apply a generous amount of the popular product known as ‘Wine Away’ and leave for a few minutes so that it can get to work. Use a new clean cloth (you may need a couple depending on the size of the stain) to blot until the mark is completely gone. If there is still a small amount of residue left, make a solution of 1 tablespoon dishwashing liquid, one tablespoon vinegar, and two cups of warm water. Blot again until the stain lifts.

Coffee

Coffee is another popular beverage with a strong flavor and a rich color, and is well known for the unattractive brown-yellow stains that it leaves behind. In order to get coffee out of carpet, you will need to use a cloth to blot away the excess. Mix a quarter cup of vinegar with a tablespoon of lemon juice (a natural bleaching agent) and a cup or two of warm water. Spritz all over the stain and blot. If this doesn’t work, you can opt for a more powerful alternative which is a quarter cup of bleach mixed with one and a quarter cups of warm water. Apply and use a clean cloth to blot until the mark has sufficiently disappeared.

Ink

Ink stains can be easily tackled with a bit of isopropyl alcohol. Put some on a clean cloth and blot away. Leave the liquid to saturate the fibers of the carpet, rinse and then vacuum up the moisture and the stain using a liquid-friendly vacuum cleaner. If you don’t have isopropyl alcohol handy, nail polish remover often does the trick.
