Stop Dog Chewing

Dogs are amazing! There’s a good reason why they are called “man’s best friend.” They bring love and joy to millions of homes across the world; they become as much a part of your family as anyone else, and they are often a source of non-stop entertainment and laughter. Of course, that doesn’t mean that your faithful friend doesn’t also have the potential for being a serious pain the neck!

If there’s one thing, almost every dog owner can relate to it’s the frustration with chewing. Dogs love to chew. You can’t really blame them; it’s just a part of their nature. However, that doesn’t mean that it’s not extremely frustrating. Fortunately, it’s not something that you simply have to suffer through. Here are some ways that you can stop your dog from chewing everything in sight.

Redirect their attention with a chew toy

Just because your dog loves to chew, doesn’t mean that your furniture, shoes, and whatever else is around the house have to be the subject of their attention. There are plenty of places where you can find some tough dog toys on sale to keep your pooch entertained for hours on end. When it comes to choosing dog toys, the sturdier, the better. The last thing you want is to provide them with a toy that they’re going to destroy almost immediately and then move onto the rest of the house!

Use bad tasting sprays to discourage them

Dogs are pretty fast learners; it’s one of the things that makes them such great pets. If doesn’t usually take too long for them to understand that doing certain things creates a negative reaction. The problem with chewing is that you often don’t find out they’ve been doing it until after the damage is done. This means that your dog likely has no idea why you’re yelling at it since it wasn’t doing anything wrong at that moment.

One of the best ways around this is to use bad tasting sprays on places where your dog loves to chew. This means that they will have a negative reaction instantly and it won’t take long before they come to directly associate the bad taste in their mouth with chewing certain things around the house. No matter how much they might love chomping down on chair legs or sneakers, a foul taste is going to make it a lot less appealing pretty much instantly.

Wear them out

A lot of the time dogs chew because they’re bored. In the same way that you might find yourself snacking out of boredom, even when you’re not hungry, your canine companion will often use chewing as a way to stave of feeling bored and frustrated. Make sure that you’re giving your dog plenty of exercise every day, especially when you’re about to leave the house. That way they won’t feel nearly as cooped up and bored, meaning that they’re that much less likely to sink their teeth into your precious furniture.
