No matter how careful you are, at some point you may find that an accident occurs leaving you with an unsightly stain that could leave you at a loss of how to clean up. Whether it’s a coffee stain, a present from a pet, or ink from a leaky pen, read on to find out the best ways to remove the most common carpet stains.

Pet Stains

The majority of pet owners are at some point left with a stain to clean up caused by their pet. Whether it’s just caused by dirt and debris from playing outside, or if your pet has decided to go to the toilet on your carpet, it can be a really frustrating situation. However, don’t panic if your pet has left a stain on your carpet, as there are a number of ways that you can get rid of the stain and the odor. First clean up the initial mess and dispose of it. If the carpet is wet, blot it with a damp towel or cloth, rather than rubbing or smearing. Then apply a carpet cleaning product designed for pet stains, and leave to lift the stain, before removing the moisture by blotting. If there is an odor that also needs to be removed, you can try using white vinegar on the carpet as well.

Ink Stains

Although you might need to use a carpet cleaning service such as progreencarpetnc.com to remove large, stubborn ink stains, it’s perfectly possible to get rid of smaller ink stains by yourself using the right methods and products. You should use a white cloth that has been damped with isopropyl alcohol, and blot the area that has been stained – don’t rub or scrub the affected area, as this could cause the ink to spread and actually make the stain worse. Let it stand for a couple of minutes, and then use a vacuum that’s suitable for using with liquids to remove any excess moisture. Depending on the severity of the stain, you might need to repeat the process a few times.

Coffee Stains

If left untreated, coffee stains can cause nasty markings especially on a light colored carpet. In order to remove a coffee stain, you should first blot the area with a white or light colored towel or cloth. If there’s a lot of spillage, you might need to use a few cloths or towels, as the fabric will soak up the coffee and cause it to spread. You should then spray the affected area with a carpet cleaning detergent, many of which are available to buy at most supermarkets, and continue to blot with a clean towel until the area is clean.

  1. I’m no pro, but I’ve definitely dealt with my fair share of stains on my carpet! Your advice about how to deal with pet stains does mirror my experience; dealing with the mess as soon as possible and using a special cleaning product on the spot has worked pretty well for me. I’ve also heard that vinegar can work pretty well for small stains, but I’m not sure how well it works on pet messes. Thanks for the article!

  2. I find myself using alcohol most of the time to fix the stains on the carpet. And when alcohol fails, a mixture of vinegar and dishsoap does the job quite well. Though you have to check the fabric washing instructions if its an expensive carpet.
