6 Ways to Strengthen Your Children’s Teeth

You want to keep your kids as healthy as possible, and proper oral care is one of the keys to overall wellness. Strong teeth are more resistant to decay and other common tooth problems, and the following tips can help keep your child’s teeth healthy and strong.

1.      Start Early

When it comes to oral health, getting an early start is vital. From the time your child’s first tooth appears, you can gently brush to remove food particles and other buildup. Your child should also start seeing a dentist by their first birthday.

2.     Supervise Brushing

Parents know that tooth brushing is important, but not supervising your child while brushing is a common mistake. Young children need guidance and assistance to be able to brush properly. Make brushing fun by singing your child’s favorite song while you brush her teeth.

3.      Don’t Forget to Floss

Flossing removes small food particles and sugars that are lodged between teeth and at the gum line. Your child’s toothbrush will not be able to reach all areas of her mouth, so don’t forget to floss! Make a goal to floss your child’s teeth once every day.

4.      See Your Dentist Regularly

An experienced dentist will be your partner in maintaining your child’s oral health. If your child is anxious about seeing a dentist, choose a pediatric dentist who specializes in children. Talk to your child before the visit, and encourage him to ask questions about anything that is unfamiliar.

5.      Maintain a Healthy Diet

One of the most important things that you can do to strengthen your child’s teeth is to offer a healthy diet. If your child’s diet is made up of processed foods that are filled with large amounts of sugar, they are more likely to experience tooth decay. Instead, fill your child’s diet with fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and other nutritious foods.

6.      Offer Plenty of Calcium

Your child needs a healthy dose of calcium each day to develop strong bones and teeth. Whole milk, cheese and yogurt are all great sources of calcium. If you do not think that your child is getting sufficient calcium in her diet, consider adding a multivitamin. A children’s vitamin contains many important vitamins and minerals that can supplement weak areas in your child’s diet.
