Promote Organic Farming

Spring is here and growing up in my family that has pretty much always meant one thing, seedlings! My Dad has three, yes THREE, gardens and one is almost entirely dedicated to growing potatoes. (And, I haven’t bought corn stalks or pumpkins in ages!!) Dad comes from a long line of farmers, especially potatoes and dairy. I almost never buy potatoes, green beans, carrots or pickles thanks to my Dad’s green thumb and my Mom’s canning expertise, and of course, their generosity.

I actually feel guilty whenever I buy potatoes in the grocery store. But, it does happen, especially during the late winter/early spring when the stock is running low or the potatoes have decided to prepare themselves for planting! The trouble is, I know, from first-hand experience, exactly what does and what doesn’t go into how my food is grown. Not only do my kids eat what their Mimi and Papa send home with us, they also pick potato bugs from the potato plants, by hand (and thoroughly enjoy doing so) and help pick up the potatoes and put them in the bushel baskets after a pass with some large behind-the-tractor rake contraption my Dad uses to turn the soil up! We actually all have a pretty good time with this and it teaches my kids a lot about farming, growing your own food and responsibility! Sadly, we live within city limits so there is little room for gardening at home.

Whenever we do have to purchase fresh produce and the local Farmer’s Market isn’t up and running, I like to buy Organic. What I don’t like is the price that I have to pay for a guarantee that this food isn’t going to introduce strong chemicals and carcinogens into my family’s digestive track! So, what can we do? Well, we can start by signing the petition below which asks Congress to support farmers who grow organic fruits and vegetables! Put your tax dollars in small family and organic farmers’ pockets rather than in the pockets of large agribusiness that charge you for brand names rather than quality foods!

By signing the petition below, you are telling Congress that you want your tax dollars to go to programs that help families gain greater access to healthy, affordable food in the new farm bill. Please join me in supporting programs that help families gain greater access to healthy, affordable food in the new farm bill.
